This Is where we hosted our first Mentorship event. It was soon after the introduction of this new pillar in our programmes. We had felt that sharing material and skills wasn’t enough, we felt there was need to help mentor the young generation as this is the only way to raise a responsible generation.
On 18 and 19th of October 2017, we had our very 1st mentorship at this precious school. Khachonge girls is located in Bungoma County in Chwele village. It is a home to many poor girls from within Bungoma County and as far as Nairobi slums. Our decision was steered by a request from Lina Cuozzo-the president of Centofarfale who sponsors a few poor girls whose guardians cannot pay their school fees. Also our founder Lydia had once done a documentary of this school and some of the issues arising were Early Pregnancies and Early marriages. We therefore felt the need to address this for a whole weekend and many other life skill lessons. With us were two counselling psychologists who helped so much to handle the girls in a way that made them pour their hearts to us. It was touching to hear the girls tell to us their untold stories and others who could not speak put them on paper.
Among the topics tackled were Self Esteem, How to Avoid Early Pregnancies and Early Marriages, Self respect, Behaviour change and many others. Talent was also handled as a topic and the girls given time to showcase their talents. It was amazing that even girls deep down the villages are extremely talented. Our guest speaker for this event was Brightstar Kasyoka, a 19 year old girl who has achieved so much in life already, she is a fourth year student at Maseno University. The event was aired in a news Bulletin of Tandao TV. Ann Soy-senior correspondents of BBC African reporters also sent a voice message and a written note to Khachonge girls. It was an amazing Experience we can never forget!
